Beyond Sagging Pants & Gold Medallions: The Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. & Why His Message Is Relevant Today.

Martin-Luther-King-Jr MLK Party Flyer mlk

If you have been online over the past week you have probably seen some of these party flyers that young people are posting to pay “homage to Dr. King on his birthday…

While I personally take exception to those images…I started thinking about if the young people of today even have a remote understanding of his legacy?

How can these kids relate to getting lynched and hung for saying the wrong thing to the wrong person, when in every major city in America these kids potentially suffer the same fate because of gun violence and perpetrators who look exactly like them…

Where does this hatred come from that makes people hate someone because of their color?  Or because of where they come from, what they look like or who they love?

I spent some time contemplating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy and marveled at the underlying current of his message.

It wasn’t really about race or racism…it was about fighting for the basic humanity of every human being…fighting for their right to be addressed as a worthy human being on the planet.

If you study his writings, you will find that his primary message was that of LOVE & RECONCILIATION. Lessons that we can all take to heart and apply today. We are living in times when people have so much anger and resentment to those who don’t look like or act like them. The reality is, when we look at someone as being less than us because of where they are from, their background, their looks, their history…we are saying in essence – “that is not God’s creation”. We are all perfectly and divinely made…that is our inherent nature. The problem lies when people don’t know how to live in LOVE.

This process starts with growing with love for yourself…but too many people never experience this because they have been taught that they are not good enough.
Society has told them that they are:
Too fat
Too skinny
Too light
Too dark
Too tall
Too short
A sinner
A whore
A criminal

…and they chose to BELIEVE IT!

The reality is – you are NONE OF THOSE THINGS. You are a spiritual being made in the image and likeness of God and as such you are PERFECTLY MADE. Until we can all get to a place where we can see the perfection of who we inherently are…we are stuck with the shame, guilt and low self esteem that comes with the labels others place on us…and we continue to play that role out.

It is like a program…we are being programmed to see ourselves in a certain way. If we live our lives and put ourselves and others within these boxes and categories…then we can be easily controlled and manipulated by those that gain societal advantage from having the masses of people fighting against and hating each other.

If we remember nothing else from the message that Dr. King worked to spread, it is that LOVE starts with FORGIVENESS. Learn to forgive others for their imperfections and recognize that every person on the planet is the sum total of their upbringing…they have pains, and insecurities and often times from that space they end up hurting you. Don’t take it personally…take the lesson from the experience and choose to forgive so that you can grow into your destiny.

But taking it a step further – LEARN TO FORGIVE YOURSELF. No matter what you have done, no matter where you have been, no matter what “they” said about you…YOU ARE DIVINELY AND PERFECTLY MADE…anything that makes you feel otherwise is a program that you MUST discard… The program of unworthiness is the unfortunate foundation that America is founded on…it is this program that makes you into a CONSUMER that keeps buying THINGS so you can feel worthy.

High end Shoes & Clothes
Luxury Cars
Weight loss products
Plastic surgery
…all of these things are promoted through the psychological machine that tells us if we get enough of these things outside of ourselves, then we will somehow become worthy…by virtue of the materialism.

You cannot grow into the abundance, joy, peace and love that the Spirit of the Divine is calling you into – if you are dwelling in anger and unforgiveness. The two frequencies cannot coexist in the same place.

Learn to love yourself enough to forgive yourself and others…and watch your life transform into exactly what you want.
